August 2016 – BDA | Morneau Shepell, a leading provider of employee assistance programs (EAPs), human resources consulting and technology, is pleased to announce it has been honored with the “Joanna Franklin Award for Direct Service” by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG). The award is for the Company’s commitment and services to problem gamblers and their families.
The award recognizes one company each year that has made substantial contributions in providing support to problem gamblers and concerned others in prevention, training, direct awareness outreach, treatment/counseling, helpline work and other related activities. BDA | Morneau Shepell was nominated for this award by the California Office of Problem Gambling.

According to national research, approximately one per cent of the adult population has a diagnosable gambling disorder and approximately four per cent displays symptoms of problem gambling at any given time. Young adults are affected at a rate of two to three times higher. If left untreated, BDA | Morneau Shepell found that the financial devastation of gambling disorder often leads to significantly higher debt, problems in relationships and at work, and ultimately suicide, making it one of the most lethal behavioral health disorders.
BDA | Morneau Shepell established its first problem gambling helpline in 1996 and has since advanced the helpline industry through moving beyond traditional telephone services to include SMS and chat. To date, the Company has trained more than 2,000 counselors and spoken to more than 150,000 problem gamblers, expanding its support services to cover approximately one third of the U.S. population.

In addition to its helpline services, BDA | Morneau Shepell has developed extensive research studies and presented findings on the innovative approaches to working with gamblers and concerned others at both national and state conferences.
